Laser fingerprint scanner

Link: Laser fingerprint scanner does away with dusting - tech - 16 November 2007 - New Scientist Tech.

This new device scans fingerprints in microseconds! Suddenly, I don't want to rely on biometrics to protect my sensitive information. I want to be able to change my passwords.

CD turned 25

A few days ago CD turned 25. It's hard to believe that it was around for that long! I bought my first audio CD in early 90s -- good ten years after the media debut on August 17, 1982. It was "Morrison Hotel" by The Doors. I couldn't listen to it for a good couple of months because I didn't have a player. Then I got a CD ROM drive for my PC. The drive was insanely expensive and had a feel of something that came from outer space.

Fast forward fifteen years -- I ripped everything I had to my hard drive and I listen to it on the iPod. I don't buy music on CDs anymore either. And finally six months ago, when I was moving from Los Angeles to San Francisco I gave a few hundred of my audio CDs -- everything I owned -- to a friend of mine. So, RIP CD. It was the glorious 25 years and we will remember you kindly!

Writely

Guys, could anyone please give me a Writely invite? Replace the first dot in my blog's domain name with @-sign for the email address. Thanks a lot!

Google Spreadsheets

Google is about to introduce Spreadsheets: Google Spreadsheets - Sneak Peek.

That's all great, guys, and I hear people even go as far as to say that combined with Writely it renders MS Office obsolete. But personally I am not so optimistic. How do you work/access your documents in the offline mode which happens oh so often at the times when you need those documents the most? We need some kind of hybrid to really solve the problem. And I wonder who is going to be the first to implement a sensible solution combining the best of both worlds. Microsoft?

Google Voicemail?

I was trying to create a filter that would automatically tag the messages received from the excellent GotVoice (it retrieves your voice mail and forwards it to your email address) when Google told me that "The label name "Voicemail" is invalid". Well, well, well!

Russian keyboard layout for Windows

If you switch between Mac and Windows every day, if you type in Russian fairly often and if you're annoyed by differences in keyboard layouts, you should try my custom keyboard layout for Windows that mirrors the Mac one. [Download, unzip and install.]

System is down

Have you noticed how they always have (or had) their system down when you point them to their mistakes? As a software engineer I feel embarrassed!

Dvorak keyboard layout

I switched to Dvorak keyboard layout a few days ago and although my typing speed is still slow (17WPM compared to 60WPM on QWERTY) I can tell already that it is going to be my default layout. It is way easier on your wrists and allegedly 40% faster (which I'll see if it is true in a few weeks).

Paper vs. digits

In my world paper will never beat the digits. Paper is accessible and familiar when you need to capture the ideas (especialy on the go), but paper is also inaccessible and bulky when you try to store and retrieve the information later. That everyone has been falling in love with paper lately is nothing more to me than a sign that a much better digital experience is about to emerge. And me, I'm not waiting, I am trying hard to make this happen. More about this later.
